How long does it take before STDs show up in a test?
The amount of time before an STD will show up in a test after exposure is called the window period. For bacterial STDs like Chlamydia and Gonorrhea the window period is approximately 3 days from exposure minimum. For type specific STDs like HIV 1/2, Herpes 1/2, Hepatitis B/C and Syphilis the window period is approximately 2 weeks from exposure minimum.

Will a urine test show STDs?
Some STDs can be detected with a urine sample such as Chlamydia and Gonorrhea. Specific tests must be run on the urine sample to detect the presents of Chlamydia and Gonorrhea.
What does an STD test cover?
All STDs have their own unique test. For example HIV is tested with and HIV antibody screening or DNA test. These tests will not detect other STDs like Herpes or Syphilis. For a general check-up to test for all common STDs you would request a panel of tests. A testing panel is a group of STD tests that are all run at the same time. How long should I wait to retest for STDs?
If you recently tested for STDs and still have concerns about a resent exposure you should retest in 6 weeks or if symptoms start to present.
Can you have an STD and be perfectly healthy?
No, you can have an STD and not have signs or symptoms for long periods of time but you are still capable of transmitting the STD to other partners and the STD could be causing other harmful health related issues without you knowing. This is why regular STD testing is so important.
Can STDs be detected without symptoms?
Yes, symptoms do not have to be present for STD testing to be accurate. STDs can be present for long periods of time without symptoms at all. This is why STDs are passed from partner to partner without proper testing.
